A St. Brigid's Cross is a cross woven from rushes, reeds, or other materials, and displayed in homes and stables to protect people and livestock. It is a symbol of Ireland, along with the shamrock and the harp. The cross is named after the Christian saint Brigid of Kildare, but the practice of making and hanging the crosses may have pagan origins. The crosses are woven left to right, following the movement of the sun.  The crosses are meant to invoke St. Brigid's blessing and ward off evil and disease.
